How to fill blank cells with the value above in Google Sheets
Fill down empty cells (e.g. merged-looking category columns) with a helper formula or one click.
Values in column A with gaps. Helper column B: in B2 enter =A2, in B3 enter and fill down:
=IF(A3<>"", A3, B2)Whole column in one formula, where column B is a column that is filled on every data row (each row takes the last non-empty A value at or above it):
=ARRAYFORMULA(IF(B2:B="", "", VLOOKUP(ROW(A2:A), FILTER({ROW(A2:A), A2:A}, A2:A<>""), 2, TRUE)))Then copy column B and Paste special → Values only over column A. CleanRows → Clean → Fill blank cells with the value above (Pro) does it in place.
Do it in two clicks inside Google Sheets. CleanRows highlights, deletes or moves duplicates by the columns you pick, ignores case/spaces/accents and compares two sheets. Free up to 1,000 rows. Get CleanRows →
